Best of the Pines
2017 Best Interior Designer
The reviews kind of say it all for Johnsye: “Johnsye helped us to accomplish so many things. She helped us choose color palettes and furnishings to bring our home in Pinehurst alive,” said one Pinehurst Couple. “She listened to the different visions my husband and I had and developed an interior design that we both loved.”

Magnolia Pavilion, a timber-framed pool pavilion in Pinehurst, N.C., has been selected as the Middle Atlantic regional winner in the 2015 Best in American Living Awards (BALA) by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). The design was done by Tony F. Miller, and the remodeler was Edward Tennant, both based in Charlotte, N.C. The interior designer was Johnsye White Interior Design, Inc. of Pinehurst.
Creating the outdoor, resort-community atmosphere of Magnolia Pavilion largely involved designing around and incorporating a beloved magnolia tree on the property. The architect used 3-D models of the pool, pavilion and slide, ensuring the finished product maintained optimal sightlines relative to the tree.
The dining rotunda, one of the pavilion’s three main sections, has a built-in pizza oven and a custom table to accommodate up to 16 people. The center section of the structure houses the outdoor kitchen and bar, while the lounge rotunda provides a covered seating area adjacent to an innovative, double-sided, Rumford-style outdoor fireplace. The pavilion’s ceiling has a floral motif that mimics that of the magnolia tree.
The pool deck features a sophisticated in-ground cooling system beneath the Bluestone pavers to help cool the dark-colored stone during the hot summer months. The new pool accommodates a much wider variety of pool activities, and features a spa and a two-story water slide.
BALA judges called the pavilion “a spectacular work of art,” applauding the attention to detail throughout, and noting the appeal of the pebble finish.
In its 32nd year, BALA recognizes outstanding achievement by builders and design professionals in all sectors of the residential housing industry, including single-family production, custom, rental, affordable, interiors, remodeling, community and international. Award winners were announced at the annual NAHB International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas.
Additional Information about the BALA program can be found at www.nahb.org/BALA, including the 2015 BALA Portfolio, featuring a review of design trends and project photographs.
